Metal 3D Printing
DMLS - Direct Metal Laser Sintering
Overview of the DMLS process
3D File Preparation
The process begins with the analysis of the 3D model, so that a manufacturing strategy can be set up. This study takes into account: time, amount of support material, load application points and need for post-processing.
Layering
The information contained in the file guides the path of a laser print head, which deposits the material as needed. As material is added, it merges in layers to form the desired object.
Laser Sintering
Once the model has been layered, the DMLS machine uses a high power laser to selectively sinter finely grained metallic powders. The laser melts and solidifies these powders, layer by layer, to build the three-dimensional part.
Post Processing
After completion of laser sintering, the part is removed from the powder bed and undergoes post-processing processes. This can include removal of supports, additional machining, heat treatments and surface finishing to achieve the desired final specifications.
